Pins - A Short Story Background

We have reached the end of Ramadan, and Eid-al-Fitr (one of two Islamic holidays, this one marks the end of Ramadan, translated to “the breaking of the fast”) has come and gone. I decided to write a piece to encompass what an average day of a hijabi could be like. Before we dive into the piece, I want to give some background.
What IS Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a month when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food and drink through the daylight hours (yes, this includes water). It is a month that holds deep meaning in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, next to charity, faith, hajj (religious pilgrimage), and prayer. Ramadan is the month in which, over the course of 23 years, the holy Quran was fully revealed as mercy to mankind. For Muslims worldwide, it is a time to practice self-discipline, gratitude, reflection, and love for the divine creator.
When I first started fasting in elementary school, Ramadan was in the summer. Now, Ramadan is in the spring, bordering summer, due to the fact that the Islamic calendar follows the lunar calendar.
It is a completely different entity, fasting during school with responsibilities and during the summer with none. Unlike when I was a child, I am glad to understand the importance of Ramadan and can appreciate it. As a child, Ramadan felt like a snail, moving so slowly, feeling like forever. This year, Ramadan came around the end of the spring semester, as everyone was in the heat of trying to ensure they were in the right spot to pass their classes. This year, Ramadan felt like it only lasted a week and then poof. Gone. I am sad to see Ramadan leave us, but Insha’Allah (hopefully), we will see it back soon enough.
A remarkable fact is that if you were born during Ramadan, the next time your birthday falls in Ramadan will be in 30 years. I was born in Ramadan, and in 9 years, 2033, I will be celebrating my birthday during Ramadan.
It's such an honor knowing I was born during such a special month and also scary knowing that I'll be 30 the next time it falls around my birthday.
I don’t know where I will be in 9 years, but I hope that when Ramadan comes in 2033, I'll be right where I need to be.

"How many pins today?"
"I've lost count."
"Was it easy to do?"
"Kinda...Honestly, I don't think about it. I just pin until it feels good."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"Do they ever come undone?"
"Oh yeah, all the time. Right now, one came undone, and I can't pin it back, so I just stuck it under my sweater. Look."
"Oh, I see! Is that a huge pin?"
"Yeah... with that much fabric, you need the industrial one."
"Industrial?"
"Yeah, it's a bigger and stronger pin. I call her my industrial bestie."
"That's funny. Do you know where all the pins are?"
"Yeah. I have some through the hijab and the rest are on the skirt. I know for sure I have
three in the hijab. With the one that came undone from the skirt, that makes me unsure how many I used."
*****
"Well, the day’s over now; might as well count my pins."
"Oh, cool! Tell me how many you use!"
"Ok. Well, three in the hijab, then the big one. Three small ones in the front, one in the back, then the one pin to my sweater. That makes... 9!"
"Oh dang, that's a lot."
"Yeah, it is."
"Do you bore yourself?"
"All the time."
"Are you used to it, or does it hurt."
"It still hurts because I'm not thinking about it, and it bores my finger. Sometimes, I do it so badly. It’ll hurt for the rest of the day."
"Oh dang, that sucks. I'm sorry. "
"That's OK, that's the life of a hijabi."

I had just run away from my fifth foster home in Memphis. I planned to cross the border into Arkansas so the authorities wouldn’t find me. Once there, I just needed to lay low for a few days until I turned 18. At least I wouldn’t be alone...

America’s revival of folk music began in the 1940s with Pete Seeger and the Weavers, the demand for folk music continued rapidly into the 1950s with the introduction of Jac Holzman’s Elektra Records and Moses Asch’s Folkway Records labels. Artists such as The Weavers – with their best-selling Carnegie Hall album in 1957 – catapulted the need to explore society’s ills through America’s most sacred genre, performed with the instruments that belonged to the people not of our homeland, but of others too. Whether it would be Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Oceania, or even Antarctica (although their music culture is unheard of and unrealized).
